Moab is a growing small town with an economy based primarily on tourism. The population of Moab is about 5,500 and the surrounding area is another 5,000. The median age is 39.8. The poverty rate in 2017 was 12.7%. Historically, uranium and potash mining, oil exploration, and agriculture were the primary economic drivers. Currently, tourism and its related services have the major influence on the economy today. Over three million visitors passed through the Moab area just last year. The City of Moab and Grand County are working to diversify its economy by targeting light manufacturing, tourism and recreation, fine arts, educational programs, television and motion picture production, agricultural, and the development of natural resources in order to provide greater economic stability.

Surrounded by the second highest mountain range in Utah (the La Sal Mtns) and a red rock desert landscape of Canyonlands, the community is located along the Colorado River at an elevation of 4100 feet. The area offers a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. If you’re an outdoor adventurer, you probably know Moab, Utah. The community also hosts numerous events throughout the year, including Easter Jeep Safari; a couple of half marathons multiple foot race and an 240 mile international endurance run; multiple car shows and 4WD events; music, bike and film, andart festivals; a Farmer’s Market; and rodeos. In addition, Moab is the gateway to Arches National Park, and only a short distance from Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park.

Moab continues to attract new residents (1.23% annually) due to its quality of life factors, scenery, and abundant recreational opportunities. The median sold price for a home in the Moab area is around $385,000. Rental prices range from $1500-$1800 per month for a three-bedroom house and start at about $1500 per month for two-bedroom apartments. Both private and public Health and fitness facilities are available. There are full medical facilities including the Moab Regional Hospital (Level IV trauma center with a robust staff of physicians of different specialties), a couple of medical clinics, and assisted living residences. There are about 17 churches and over 85 service organizations in the community. There are three schools: Grand County High School, Grand County Middle School and HMK Elementary. The community also has a Charter school. Utah State University has an active Extension campus in Moab. Several day care facilities are also available in the area.
